5 Super Simple Ways To Cut Down Your Contribution To Climate Change

It’s impossible to solve a problem by staring at it blankly and hoping it’ll go away. And in this case, this is exactly how climate change can feel. Last week, I wrote about having watched the new documentary Before The Flood, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and how inspiring it was. Climate change is one of those situations where it’s really beneficial to cut the problem down into small chunks, and come up with realistic and attainable steps to manage it.

We all play a part in our future and it’s scary to think that one day the planet and atmosphere we call home, called completely turn against us. So here are 5 really easy, and simple habits that we can start implementing into our daily routines to do our part against fighting climate change.

1) Walk more/ carpool/buy yourself a bike/take public transport.

Transportation is one of the biggest contributors to pollution and therefore global warming. So try and walk as much as you can, find alternative transport like public transport, or dust off your bike helmet and enjoy the fresh air. Not only is it great for keeping you fit and healthy, it’ll also cut down your carbon footprint and monthly travel costs by a significant amount.

2) Eat wisely. 

Try and buy local or organically grown produce, grow your own food, and stay away from processed foods. Livestock products are among the most resource-intensive to produce, so try and have at least one meat-free meal a day. One of the biggest contributors is beef and dairy farming. A simple switch such as swapping your beef for chicken/tofu/corn etc has crazy effects on the reduction of methane production, one of the most potent greenhouse gases.

3) Be energy efficient.

Are you already switching off lights? Amazing! Next you can change light bulbs to LEDs, compact fluorescents and other energy saving alternatives. Unplug your TVs and all other electrical appliances when you’re not using them. Choose to air dry clothes instead of always using the tumble dryer. Wash your clothes in cold or warm water (not too hot) to save on energy.  Get a home energy audit done for your home, which will help you to identify areas that consume lots of energy so that you can do something about it.

4) Cut down on your amount of waste & your contribution to landfill.

‘Reduce, reuse, recycle’ isn’t just a catchy rhyme, it’s also an incredibly efficient way of managing your amount of waste contribution. Waste that sits in landfills reduces potent methane molecules into our atmosphere. Keep stuff out of landfills by composting kitchen scraps and garden trimmings, and recycling paper, plastic, metal and glass. When shopping, try and choose items with the least amount of packaging too!

5) Speak up!

The only way great change is achieved is through awareness and education. Speak up and spread the word by talking about the detrimental effects climate change is having right now on our environment, and the easy switches people can make to help save our planet. If people see you making these small habits, it’s a lot easier for them to follow in your footsteps as they see it’s more than manageable. We call it the domino-like effect. So pass it on!
