5 Ways to Start Your Morning Off In The Best Way!

Those first few minutes in the morning set the tone for your entire day. What you do in those crucial moments can make the difference between a positive, productive day and one that you wish you’d done slightly differently. Most people hit the snooze button, run through the shower, inhale breakfast (if they have any at all) and bolt out the door. Now before your day has even begun you’re already stressed, anxious and probably wishing you were back in bed again.

The key to a great morning is creating a space for yourself that’s filled with activities and habits that you love, which put you in a mindset where you feel you’re capable of achieving everything and anythingΒ you desire. So here are five things to think about integrating into your morning routine which could totally change how you view waking up in the mornings.

1) Instead of hitting the snooze button, slowly stretch & take in your surroundings for a few minutes.

Listen, I get it. Your bed is warm, cozy and you’re ridiculously comfortable. But when your alarm goes off your REM cycle is interrupted. If you fall back asleep again, you tend to go into an even deeper sleep and so when you’re woken up again you’re likely to be even more groggy.

Now this isn’t to say you have to immediately jump out of bed, unless this is something you love to do and makes you feel instantly energised, then go for it. But for others who aren’t so lucky, being gentle with yourself and allowing yourself the space to wake up slowly, take in your surroundings, stretch etc. is a form of self-care and can really help you to embrace the new morning. You could even name three things that you’re grateful to have this morning.

2) Reserve yourself at least an hour to get ready every morning.

I love to sleep as much as the next person (if not more) so this one has always been a tough one for me to grasp. But it’t not as hard as it sounds, you just need to adjust your sleeping times. Try going to bed an hour or even half an hour earlier so that you’re not losing out on sleep by waking up slightly earlier. Giving yourself this time in the morning means you’re not feeling rushed and anxious, and you allow yourself the time to start your day off on the right note. You’ll thank yourself a few hours later at work.

3) Make yourself a protein-filled breakfast.

The clichΓ© saying ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ is something that I’ve written about before (you can check it out here) and couldn’t be more true. There are so many benefits to eating a healthy, well-balanced, protein-filled breakfast such as:

  • provides the energy and nutrients that lead you to increased concentration and productivity
  • helps you maintain a healthy body weight
  • prevents you from snacking on sugary and unhealthily snacks before lunch
  • gives the vitamins and minerals that you may have otherwise missed that day
  • prevents mid-morning slumps

If you find yourself not hungry in the morning, it’s because your body had gotten used to you not eating breakfast and is also a sign of you slowing down your own metabolism which is something we don’t want. I promise you, as soon as you get into the routine of eating breakfast, you’ll start to wake up hungry! It’s all about creating positive habits that are going to work for you in the long run.

4) Set at least one daily intention for the day

Whilst stretching and gently waking up, set one intention for the day. That can be anything from feeling confident about your presentation this afternoon or booking that doctor’s appointment you’ve been delaying for weeks. Whatever it is that you need in that moment, recognise it and commit to it for the day. It can range from a certain task or even just a feeling you would like to carry around with you all day. Whatever it is, it has the ability to be incredibly powerful for your state of mind and therefore the success of your day.

5) Take the time to look good

Obviously, as a stylist, this was going to be on the list. But I can’t tell you how much of an impact dressing well has on how you feel. It is such a confidence builder, and can really enhance the way you view yourself and the way others around you view you. It could be the difference between you and your co-worker getting that promotion you’ve been working hard towards. If you’re like me and it takes you a while to get ready, plan your outfit the night before and have it all laid out for you when you wake up.

Ultimately, what makes a great morning varies for each person. So give yourself the space and time to figure out the type of activities that really resonate with you and what you need.
