The benefits of regular exercise are hard to ignore. There is no simpler cure to reducing stress levels and increasing feel-good hormones than exercise. The thing is, is that most of us know how good exercise is for us but struggle to stay motivated enough to keep it a regular habit.
Really understanding why it’s so important for our bodies and all the incredible benefits can be powerful motivation. So here are a few reasons why incorporating even just 10-30 minutes a day can change your life:
1) It’s an instant mood-booster
Physical exercise can be a better alternative to taking the edge off a rough day than a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine. Exercise stimulates the release of Dopamine, a chemical that plays a role in happiness, and is a neurotransmitter in the brain that’s necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness. So just 30 minutes of exercise, or even a brisk walk outside can help you feel instantly better.
2) It reduces your stress levels & anxiety
Exercise can lower your level of stress & anxiety, not only in the short term, but will also help you feel less stressed out in general. By subjecting your body to low levels of stress (by raising your heart rate during exercise) your body creates subtle hormonal changes to deal with the ‘stress,’ making you stronger and increasing your endurance & strength. So by doing this regularly, you’re essentially enabling your body to deal with stress in all areas of life a lot better.
3) It fights insomnia
Our sleep is crucial as human beings and we all know how groggy we can get when we’ve had a bad nights sleep. So instead of reaching for the sleeping pill, fit in a workout in the evening after work. Not only will you be able to sweat away the stresses of the day, it’ll also prepare you for a great nights’ sleep.
For morning people, exercise can be a great motivator for getting out of bed and starting your day off the right way. Squeeze in a but of yoga, pilates, or even a spin class before work – and watch how you’re a lot more productive, creative and happy at work.
4) It’s an overall energy booster
Similar to the point above, regular exercise can make your body stronger and therefore work better which results in more energy available. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores.
So no matter how tired you’re feeling, how long your work day has been, or how exhausting the daily chores have been – make time to workout. Trust me, you’ll feel so much more energised and amazing afterwards.
5) All your other goals will become that much more attainable
Because exercise and working out is a crucial aspect of our self-care routine, the self-esteem benefits are undeniable. Exercise will not only help you look better, but it’ll also make you FEEL better, because you’ll be feeling stronger, fitter and ultimately more confident.
And when you’re feeling more confident, it positively impacts every area of your life including all your goals and aspirations. You’ll now have a lot more confidence to be able to get out there and make the world your own.
So the next time you’re feeling too tired, stressed or anxious to exercise. PAUSE, and remind yourself of this list and all the incredible ways you’re creating a healthier and happier life for yourself. That should be motivation enough!
