5 Benefits Of Finding Mentors Along Your Career & Life Path

When I look back on my career path so far, my mentors along the way are people I will forever be grateful for, and I always recognise how incredibly impactful they were on my journey.

Mentors are invaluable for your future career and should be people that you are constantly seeking out along your journey.

Here are some reasons why you should find yourself your next mentor:

1) They are your blue print for success

Having a mentor is like having someone who has already fool-proofed a similar career path to yours and knows all the mistakes that you shouldn’t make. They are an invaluable source of knowledge, and knowledge is power. Looking back, my mentors have been incremental to my career, to my growth, and I quite simply wouldn’t be where I am today without their guidance. Having someone with more life experience, wisdom and knowledge not only helps you grow as a person, but also helps you feel at ease when reminded that someone has been in your shoes before and reached success.

2) They can help grow your network of connections

With years of experience under their belt, they’ll be likely to have a huge array of valuable connections which may open up far more career opportunities for you. Work events with your mentor are incredible ways of making those crucial connections, and maintaining professional work relationships with these new contacts. Make sure to always follow up with new connections as you never know where it may lead you, and of course a thank you to your mentor for introducing you will go a long way.

3) They are free of charge

The best thing about having a mentor is that they are there because they genuinely want to help you, AND they’re free of charge. However, remember to never take that for granted. In order to grow a strong relationship, it has to be beneficial to both parties. Make sure your mentor knows how grateful you are for their constant support and guidance. Treat them to coffee, or lunch every now and again to return the favour. Being humble and grateful are two of the most attractive qualities in a person, and also happen to be qualities that will make you far more appealing to a new employer.

4) They enable you to think outside the boxΒ

Being able to bounce off ideas with someone who’s already been there and done it, can really help broaden your mind to ideas you perhaps would never have thought about before. Getting creative and brainstorming new ideas always leads to really successful outcomes when you’re collaborating with someone who inspires and motivates you. Together you can be a force to be reckoned with, whether they’re from the same field as you or not.

5) They can become lifelong friends

I am still in contact with every one of my mentors and I consider each of them to be special people in my life. They become way more than just my mentors, they become lifelong friends. Some of them helped me through really difficult situations in my life on a personal level and gave me the support, guidance and encouragement to keep on keeping on, which is something I will forever be grateful for.

So get out there and find yourself your very own mentor in life… you never know where it may lead you to, and that’s half of the excitement.
